Robert Gleadow joined the Jette Parker Young Artists’ Programme last September, and I have been meaning to feature him as Singer of the Month ever since. He was born in Canada only about twenty-two years ago, but his voice is already very well-developed. He sings in tune, too. Robert is also a very fine stage performer. He has only sung small roles for the Royal Opera, but each has made a lasting impression, particularly his Dom Henrique Dom Sebastien, Fiorello Il barbiere di Siviglia, Zaretsky Yevgeny Onegin, and, in October 2006, Wagner Faust, which was reviewed by Violetta. He has also covered Nardo La finta giardiniera.

Robert was a member of the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble, where his performances included: Dido and Aeneas, The Coffee Cantata, Colline La boheme and the Old Gypay Il trovatore. He also covered roles including Raimondo Lucia di Lammermoor and Orbazzno Tancredi. He appeared in Manfred and La donna del lago at the Edinburgh Festival this year. Other roles include Sarastro, Sparafucile, Rossini’s Don Basilio, The Commander The Handmaid’s Tale, In concert, he has sung Haydn’s Creation, the Requiems of Mozart and Faure, Schubert’s Winterreise, and Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel.

Robert is about to take over the role of Colline in the ROH’s production of La boheme. Later this season, he will sing Doctor Pelleas et Melisande and Angelotti Tosca (having sung Sciarrone in the original producton). He will cover Zoroastro Orlando.

Plans outside the ROH include Mozart’s Figaro for Canadian Opera and Rossini’s Basilio in Italy and Portugal.
