Sarah Tynan has been a member of the ENO’s Young Singer programme for the past couple of years. This year, she has appeared as Sister Constance The Carmelites, Atalanta Xerxes, Yum-Yum The Mikado and Dalinda Ariodante. Most recently, she appeared in The Arias that Time Forgot, the final concert in the Barbican’s Mostly Mozart Festival. The Primi Divi first heard Sarah on a radio broadcast when she took over the role of Iphis Jephtha at the last minute for WNO. Other roles include Papagena, Tytania A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Woodbird Siegfried, which she sang whilst riding a scooter. She has received excellent reviews in all these roles.

Sarah was born in London, and doesn’t seem to be any relation of the Irish soprano Ailish Tynan, despite sharing her surname and looking rather like her. She studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. In addition to the ENO and WNO, she has sung with Opera Holland Park, La Monnaie, Phoenix Opera and at the St Endellion Festival. She has sung the Messiah with the Halle Orchestra and Mahler’s Symphony no. 2 with the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra. Other opera roles include: Zerlina, Despina, Bella The Midsummer Marriage, the Governess The Turn of the Screw, Elsie The Yeoman of the Guard, title role The Cunning Little Vixen and Drusilla L’incoronazione di Poppea.

Next season, she will sing Susanna Le nozze di Figaro and Gianetta The Gondoliers for the ENO and Melanto/Juno/Fortine Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria for WNO.
