Anne Mason, mezzo-soprano
Anne Mason sang the Kostelnicka in English Touring Opera’s production of Jenufa, which was reviewed by Barry Tone. It was an astounding performance both vocally and dramatically. The Primi Divi have previously seen Anne as an excellent (if very young-looking) Marcellina for Glyndebourne on Tour, and she also sings on my recording of Jonathan Dove’s Flight, singing the role of the Minkswoman – a character who has to give birth onstage. (It’s worryingly convincing.)
Anne was born in Lincolnshire and studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio, and was a member of the Glyndebourne Chorus. She made her first operatic appearance as the Second Bridesmaid Le nozze di Figaro. She has also sung Second Lady Die Zauberflote and Second Maid Elektra. Although a mezzo-soprano, Anne’s repertoire includes the soprano role of the Kostelnicka and the contralto role of Giulio Cesare – and many varied roles in between, ranging from Handel to Wagner. Other roles include Adalgisa Norma, Dorabella Cosi fan tutte, Sesto La clemenza di Tito, Mercedes Carmen, Wellgunde and Waltraute Der Ring, Annina Der Rosenkavalier, Suzuki Madama Butterfly, Zulma L’italiana in Algeri and Azucena Il trovatore. Anne has sung with ROH, ENO, WNO, Opera North, Scottish Opera and at the Aix-en-Provence Festival.
Recently, Anne has sung title role Maria Stuarda (ETO), Teresa La sonnambula (Opera Holland Park), and returned to Glyndebourne’s production of Flight. She is currently singing another character in the Ring Cycle – the role of Fricka in Das Rheingold for De Vlaamse Opera. Next year, she will sing the same character in Die Walkure. Anne will also be singing Feklusa Katya Kabanova for the ROH, and, if they have any sense (which I think they do), she will be covering the Kabanicha too.
